Psychotherapy

Many people reach a place in their lives when certain ways of managing our everyday lives no longer seems to be effective. Often, we might feel distracted by our busy minds or overwhelmed by intense feelings and emotions. We can mistakenly believe that busying ourselves or “pushing through” will ease our unrest; however what often lies beneath is an array of emotional and psychological challenges such as anxiety, depression, relationship and professional issues, stress, and addiction. Attempting to suppress these emotions can create powerful internal struggle and hinder our ability to connect with others and live life to the fullest.

About Heather

I earned a Master’s of Science in Professional Counseling and an Education Specialist degree at Georgia State University. I’m currently in private practice in Atlanta, GA. I have experience working with children, adolescents, families and adults coping with issues such as depression, anxiety, life transitions, trauma, divorce, and addiction. I am extensively trained in mindfulness-based therapies and Mindfulness-Based Relapse Prevention. Additionally, I provide consultation to parents whose children may be struggling with behavior issues, social skill development and academics in their current school setting. Coping with these challenges can sometimes cause isolation, sadness and even anger. My hope is to create a safe and supportive environment in which you can talk about your situation without fear.

My Approach

When deciding on a therapist, it is especially important to feel a connection with the one you choose. My personal approach to therapy is one of commitment and collaboration. Through building a collaborative therapeutic relationship my intention is to help clients experience genuine acceptance, empathy and support, which I believe is the foundation for personal growth and change. While I utilize a variety of approaches in my work with clients, I mainly draw from interpersonal, humanistic and mindfulness-based therapies. The purpose of this approach is to help clients identify and change maladaptive life patterns, develop more balanced attitudes towards themselves and others, develop more satisfying relationships, and improve their ability to manage stress and anxiety. Through this integrative and holistic process of healing, it is my goal to help clients live more authentic lives by finding balance, resolving conflicts, and finding courage to take personal risks.
